Barbados Rum Distilleries: The Ultimate Self-Drive Tour

Published by apparent on

Barbados has a strong claim to being the birthplace of rum — with distilling traditions going back nearly 400 years. A self-drive distillery tour is one of the most rewarding ways to spend a day on the island.

Why a Self-Drive Distillery Tour?

The major distilleries are spread across the island and not easily connected by public transport. A rental car gives you the flexibility to visit at your own pace — just be sure to designate a driver or plan your tastings responsibly.

Stop 1: Mount Gay Rum Visitor Centre (Bridgetown)

Start at Mount Gay in Bridgetown — the oldest commercial rum brand in the world, with records going back to 1703. The visitor centre offers distillery tours, tastings and a fascinating history of Barbadian rum-making.

Stop 2: St. Nicholas Abbey (St. Peter)

Drive north to St. Nicholas Abbey, a stunning 17th-century plantation house that doubles as a working rum distillery. It’s one of only three Jacobean mansions in the western hemisphere and produces small-batch heritage rum. Tours include the house, the cherry tree walk and a tasting.

Stop 3: Foursquare Rum Distillery (St. Philip)

Head south to Foursquare, widely regarded as one of the finest craft rum producers in the world. Their expressions regularly top international awards. Tours are available and the shop is excellent for picking up bottles to take home.

Stop 4: Malibu Beach Bar (Prospect)

End the day at the Malibu Beach Bar on the west coast. Technically a rum-inspired cocktail bar rather than a working distillery, but an iconic Barbados destination and the perfect sundowner spot.

Responsible Touring

The golden rule of a rum tour: pace yourself. Eat well before and between stops, drink water, and ensure your driver sticks to tastings. Many visitors find it easier to split the driving days — distilleries on day one, beach on day two.
