Exploring Bridgetown, Barbados: A Complete Sightseeing Guide

Published by apparent on

Bridgetown is the capital and soul of Barbados. A UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2011, it combines colonial architecture, a lively waterfront and a vibrant local culture that’s unlike anywhere else in the Caribbean.

Getting to Bridgetown

Bridgetown is easily reached from most parts of the island in 20–40 minutes by car. If you’re staying on the west coast, the ABC Highway is the quickest route. Hiring a car gives you the flexibility to arrive early and leave when you’re ready.

Parking in Bridgetown

Street parking exists around the perimeter of the city centre, but the easiest option is the Cheapside Market car park or the multi-storey near Broad Street. Arrive before 9am for the best spots.

The Historic Garrison

Start at the Barbados Garrison — a UNESCO-listed military complex from the 17th and 18th centuries. The Barbados Museum is located here and offers an excellent overview of the island’s history from indigenous peoples through the colonial era.

The Careenage and Waterfront

Walk along The Careenage, Bridgetown’s inner harbour. Traditional wooden schooners are moored here and the waterfront cafés are perfect for people-watching. The Independence Arch and Heroes Square are nearby.

Broad Street Shopping

Broad Street is Barbados’s main commercial thoroughfare. Duty-free shopping includes rum, jewellery, electronics and locally made goods. Cave Shepherd is the island’s longest-standing department store.

The Parliament Buildings

The neo-Gothic parliament buildings (circa 1874) face National Heroes Square and are among the most photographed buildings in Barbados. The Parliament Museum inside is worth the entrance fee.

Eating in Bridgetown

  • Champers at Accra Beach — slightly outside Bridgetown but worth the drive
  • The Waterfront Café — right on The Careenage, great atmosphere
  • Cheapside Market — local snacks and fresh produce at local prices
  • Brown Sugar restaurant — legendary Bajan buffet near the Garrison
