Barbados for Digital Nomads and Remote Workers

Published by apparent on

Barbados launched the Welcome Stamp visa in 2020 — a 12-month renewable remote-work visa that lets digital nomads and remote workers live legally on the island while working for overseas employers. It’s become one of the most popular remote-work visas in the world.

The Barbados Welcome Stamp

The visa costs US$2,000 per person (or US$3,000 for a family) and requires proof of employment or self-employment with income above US$50,000 per year. There’s no local tax on foreign-sourced income, making it financially attractive for many remote workers.

Internet and Connectivity

Connectivity in Barbados has improved dramatically. Most accommodation in populated areas has fibre or cable broadband. Co-working spaces exist in Bridgetown and Holetown. Mobile data on the Flow and Digicel networks is reliable for backup. Starlink is also available.

Getting Around as a Remote Worker

Barbados has limited public transport infrastructure, and working remotely from different locations — coffee shops, beaches, co-working spaces — is much easier with a car. Our long-term car hire options are popular with Welcome Stamp holders and offer monthly rates significantly better than short-term rentals.

Cost of Living

Barbados is not a cheap destination, but it’s more affordable than many assume for longer stays. Local supermarkets, rum shops and markets keep food costs reasonable. The biggest savings come from cooking at home and avoiding tourist-area dining every night.

Best Areas to Live

  • Christ Church (south) — most amenities, beaches, restaurants
  • St. James (west) — upscale, quieter, Platinum Coast access
  • St. Michael (Bridgetown area) — most urban, best for non-car commuting
  • St. Philip (east/south-east) — quieter, local feel, more affordable

Community

The digital nomad community in Barbados is active and welcoming. Facebook groups, Meetup events and the Welcome Stamp community network make it easy to connect with other remote workers shortly after arriving.

Setting Up Your Car

Many Welcome Stamp holders arrange a car before they arrive. You can book your long-term rental online and have your vehicle ready at Grantley Adams Airport on arrival. Read the FAQs for information on what’s needed to drive in Barbados as a visitor or resident.
