Renting a Car vs Taking Taxis in Barbados: Which is Better?

This is one of the most common questions we get from visitors before they arrive. The honest answer is that it depends on what kind of trip you are planning — but for most visitors, a rental car wins on almost every measure. Here is the full comparison.

Cost

A rental car from Apparent costs from around Bds$80–130 per day depending on vehicle category and season. That covers unlimited mileage and basic insurance. A taxi from the airport to the south coast is around Bds$40–50. A taxi from the south coast to Bathsheba and back is around Bds$120–160. A full day of taxis — airport, beach, restaurant, town, restaurant, hotel — adds up to Bds$200–300 easily.

For a week’s trip where you are moving around at all, the rental car is almost always cheaper than taxis for the same journeys.

Convenience

Barbados does not have a taxi app equivalent to Uber. You call a number, you wait. On busy days — particularly Friday evenings, Oistins Fish Fry nights and during Crop Over — waiting 30–45 minutes for a taxi is normal. With a rental car, you leave when you want and return when you want.

Freedom

This is the biggest factor and the hardest to put a number on. When Taxis Make Sense

There are genuine scenarios where a taxi is the better choice. If you are staying in one place and plan beach-only days without exploring, taxis cover that fine. If you plan to drink heavily every day and do not want to manage a vehicle, taxis remove that complication. For arrival and departure if you are staying in a hotel with transfers, a taxi for those specific legs is perfectly sensible.

The Hybrid Approach
