Barbados with Kids: A Family Travel Guide

Barbados is one of the most welcoming destinations in the Caribbean for families. The island is safe, the people are warm, the sea on the west coast is calm enough for small children, and the distances are short enough that even young kids can handle a day of exploring. Here is what to know before you go.

Best Beaches for Families

For young children, the west coast beaches are ideal. Paynes Bay, Holetown Beach and Mullins Beach all have calm, shallow water, lifeguards on busy days, and facilities nearby. Brighton Beach near Bridgetown is a local favourite for families and is rarely crowded with tourists. Avoid east coast beaches with young children — the Atlantic surf is powerful.

Activities Kids Love

The Barbados Wildlife Reserve in St. Peter is an open walk-through sanctuary where green monkeys, brocket deer, tortoises and peacocks wander freely — children are usually mesmerised. Folkestone Marine Park in St. James has a shallow snorkelling trail with excellent visibility. The Atlantis Submarine in Bridgetown takes you 45 metres below the surface — genuinely impressive for older kids. The Harrison’s Cave crystal caverns are another reliable hit.

Car Seats and Child Restraints

Child car seats are required by law in Barbados for children under 5. We offer child seats on request — please specify your child’s age and weight when booking so we have the right seat ready at pickup. Booster seats for older children are also available.

Getting Around with Children

A rental car makes family travel in Barbados infinitely easier. Public buses do not have air conditioning on all routes, do not run to a fixed schedule, and require walking to reach — none of which works well with tired children. With your own car, you control the timing, can stop when needed, and can carry everything you need for a beach day without the logistics.

Eating Out with Kids

Barbados is relaxed about children in restaurants. Most places welcome families at dinner. The Oistins Fish Fry is excellent for families — casual, outdoors, and with enough noise and activity that children fit right in. Rum shop lunches are another good option: cheap, fast, and full of rice and chicken that even picky eaters will eat.
