The Perfect Barbados Weekend: A 48-Hour Itinerary
Whether you’re a stopover visitor or a local making the most of the weekend, Barbados packs an enormous amount into a small island. Here’s the ideal 48-hour itinerary — best done with your own rental car.
Friday Evening: Arrive and Settle In
Pick up your car from Grantley Adams Airport and head to your accommodation. In the evening, grab dinner in Oistins — the fish fry is a local institution and one of the best food experiences on the island. Grilled mahi-mahi, flying fish and festival (sweet fried dough) are all unmissable.
Saturday Morning: West Coast Beaches
Start your day at Paynes Bay on the west coast. Arrive early for the sea turtle feeding — turtles gather here most mornings and you can snorkel alongside them. From there, drive north through Holetown to Mullins Beach for a swim and a bite at the beach bar.
Saturday Afternoon: North Point
Drive to the northern tip of the island. Visit the Animal Flower Cave for remarkable natural sea pools carved into the cliffside. The drive itself along the coast road is spectacular.
Saturday Evening: Sunset on the West Coast
Position yourself at a west-coast beach bar for sunset — Driftwood, Surfer’s Bay or any spot around Fitts Village. The sky turns extraordinary colours over calm Caribbean water.
Sunday Morning: East Coast Adventure
Cross the island to Bathsheba on the east coast. The Soup Bowl surf break is world-class, and even if you’re not surfing, watching the waves crash against the rock formations is unforgettable. Stop at a rum shop nearby for breakfast and local conversation.
Sunday Afternoon: Harrison’s Cave
Book an electric tram tour through Harrison’s Cave — one of Barbados’s most unique attractions. The cave system features stalactites, stalagmites and underground streams. Book ahead as tours can sell out.
Sunday Evening: Bridgetown and Home
Spend your last hours strolling around Bridgetown’s historic waterfront and Broad Street before returning your rental car. Book your weekend rental here and see our current deals for the best rates.
