Getting Around Barbados: Car Rental vs Taxi vs Bus
One of the first decisions every visitor to Barbados faces is how to get around the island. There are three main options — public buses, taxis, and rental cars — and the right choice depends on how you want to explore. Here’s an honest comparison.
Public Buses
Barbados has an extensive and affordable bus network operated by the Transport Board (blue buses) and privately-operated ZR vans (yellow minibuses). The flat fare is Bds$3.50 anywhere on the island. Buses run frequently on the main south and west coast corridors (Bridgetown to Speightstown, Bridgetown to Oistins), with service starting around 6am and running until late evening. Limitations: the east coast is poorly served, many key attractions (Harrison’s Cave, St. Nicholas Abbey, Bathsheba by a direct route) require changes or long walks. Not practical for exploring the full island.
Taxis
Taxis are widely available and reliable. There are no meters — fares are regulated and published by the Barbados Tourism Authority, but always agree on the price before you travel. Airport to south coast accommodation typically runs Bds$50–70; airport to west coast Bds$70–100. Limitations: taxis are expensive when used for multiple daily trips. A day of independent exploration visiting 3–4 stops can easily cost Bds$200–300 in taxi fares. Good for a single airport transfer or a night out.
Rental Car — The Case for Driving Yourself
A rental car gives you complete freedom — go where you want, when you want, stop whenever you like, and carry beach gear, groceries, and luggage without constraint. For stays of three or more days, a rental car is almost always more cost-effective than daily taxis, and far more flexible than buses. Barbados drives on the left, roads are generally well-maintained, and the island is small enough that you’ll rarely drive more than 30 minutes between destinations. Our Honest Recommendation
For visitors spending 3+ days and wanting to explore beyond the resort corridor: rent a car. For a 2-night business trip or a full-service resort holiday: taxis work fine. The bus is excellent value if you’re on a tight budget and happy to stick to the main tourist routes. See our FAQs for information on driving licences and requirements.
