Barbados Road Trip: The Ultimate Coastal Drive
Barbados is just 34km long and 23km wide — small enough to drive around in a single day, yet packed with enough variety to fill a week of exploration. A self-drive road trip is without question the best way to experience the whole island. Rent a car with appaRent and follow this classic island loop.
The Route Overview
Start in Bridgetown, drive north up the Platinum Coast, loop across the dramatic north tip through St. Lucy, down the rugged Atlantic east coast through St. Andrew and St. Joseph, then back via the south coast. Total distance: approximately 110km. Allow a full day with stops, or split it over two days for a more relaxed pace.
Leg 1 — Bridgetown to Speightstown (West Coast)
Head north on Highway 1 through St. James — the Platinum Coast strip. Stop at Holetown for breakfast (it’s where English settlers first landed in 1625). Continue to Speightstown, Barbados’s charming second city, with its preserved Georgian streetscape and excellent seafood restaurants. This leg takes about 40 minutes without stops.
Leg 2 — North Coast and Scotland District
From Speightstown, head inland and north to St. Nicholas Abbey — a 17th-century Jacobean plantation house with a working rum distillery. Then cross to the north tip: the Animal Flower Cave at North Point offers dramatic Atlantic views from sea-level caves. The Scotland District in St. Andrew has the most dramatic inland scenery on the island — rolling hills and steep gullies unlike anywhere else in the Caribbean.
Leg 3 — East Coast Drive
The east coast road through St. Andrew and St. Joseph is one of the most scenic drives in the Eastern Caribbean. Stop at Bathsheba — the famous mushroom rocks, the Soup Bowl surf break, and the Atlantis Hotel for lunch. Continue south through Cattlewash and the stunning interior before rejoining the south coast.
Leg 4 — South Coast Return
End your loop on the lively south coast. Oistins is the place to finish — the famous Fish Fry operates every evening (Friday nights are legendary) with fresh catch, local rum, and live music. A perfect end to a full day on the road.
